The word “mammon”, in Hebrew, is neutral; it is neither good nor bad. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus personified mammon as a tricky, illusory, often idolized entity; a burdensome ruler that demands total allegiance. He pointed out that mammon encourages the belief that reputation, personal value, and security are found only in it, and that faith and sharing are fine subjects for a Sunday school class, but are inadequate lifestyles for surviving in the swamp of this world. Later, when a rich man refused to surrender his earthly treasures for the sake of the life he claimed he desired, Jesus said that the probability of his- or any one else’s- inheriting eternal life with a faithless mindset was about the same as a camel passing through a needle’s eye. He said that mammon demands two clenched fists that are incapable of grasping God’s hand and that, since humans have only one life to live and two hands to offer, we must choose whose hand should fill ours. In the end, Jesus implied, it is not mammon that becomes our master, but we ourselves.

Don’t We Serve Two Masters, Anyway?

Matthew 6:16-34, Romans 12:1-2

Who We Are

Shiloh Community Church is a group of Believers who point at Jesus and say, "We can't prove a thing, but there's something about his eyes and his voice. There's something about the way he carries his head, his hands, the way he carries his cross—the way he carries us.”

We believe Jesus when he said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me." (John 14:6) He didn't say that any doctrine or denomination was the way, the truth, and the life. He said that he was.

We are a group of Believers who are on the way, though not necessarily very far along it, and who have at least some dim and half-baked notion of whom to thank.
